Woodville Grady Rozzell, 86, of 101 Connally St., Black Mountain passed away Friday, September 4, 2009.

He was born August 26, 1923 in White County, TN, to the late Frank David and Nancy Savage Rozzell.

His greatest gift was the love he gave his wife of 65 years, Betty Thomas Rozzell. He took great pride in his children; David Rozzell and wife, Judith, Terri Brooks and husband, Joe; Carol Tyson and husband, Joe and Peg Rozzell; grandchildren, Amy Behrendt and husband, Trey, Nancy Johnson and husband, Jay, Jody Brooks, Alisun and Aaron Osteen, Olivia and Andrew Tyson and great grandchildren, Conner and Sophie Behrendt and Yates and Hannah Johnson; sister, Nancy Campbell and husband, Verlie.

He enjoyed his relationships at First Baptist Church of Black Mountain of where he was a member. Grady served as deacon, taught Sunday School, coached the ladies softball teams, designed and did much of the construction work for the church parlor and laid out and installed much of the current landscape.

Mr. Rozzell served his country in WWII as a B-17 bomber pilot with the 401st Bombardment Group of the 8th US Army Air Force and flew 35 missions out of Deenethorpe, UK including support of the D-Day invasion. He then served many years as an officer in the Tennessee National Guard.

Grady was educated in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Chattanooga and spent most of his working career in textile factories of the Burlington Industries Company in an engineering capacity before he moved to Swannanoa in 1961 to assume the role of Plant Engineer at Beacon Manufacturing Company. After retirement he owned and operated Wayside Nursery.

Mr. Rozzell served his community as a Buncombe County School Board Member with one year of his commitment as chairman. He was inducted into the C.D. Owen High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2007 in recognition of his many years of support. He enjoyed golf, tennis, gardening, growing grass, raising beagles and horses and visiting with his wonderful neighbors.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Sunday, September 6, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in First Baptist Church, Black Mountain with the Reverends David Rayburn and Edgar Ferrell officiating. Burial will be Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. in the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
