Darlene Payne was young at heart. She loved playing games and eating candy as much in her adulthood as when she was a kid. "She loved sweet food, especially pop, peanut butter and ice cream." said Payne's granddaughter, Allison Winkler.
Darlene passed away Sunday at Middletown regional Hospital at the age of 56. She was born Winifred "Darlene" Messer on May 29, 1947 in Hamilton, the daughter of Henry and Pearl Messer. Candy wasn't the only thing Darlene couldn't get enough of. "She loved the stuffed animals that sing and dance". Once you'd get her laughing, she couldn't stop. Darlene adored live animals as well, particularly kittens. Darlene shared her cheery, youthful attitude with her family, and especially enjoyed spending time with the children in the family. One time on Easter she was helping us find eggs, because she was there when we hid them, she'd point them out to the kids when we couldn't find them and no one knew who was doing it.
Darlene is survived by one son Thomas H payne of Hamilton, one daughter, Regina J. Winkler of Middletown and two brothers, Larry Messer of Hamilton and Thomas Messer of Middletown, one sister. Evelyn Hatfield of Hamilton and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Mashonda Star Morris Payne.
