Buford W. Catchings was born in 1926 in Red Rock, TX to Buck and Ida (Donnell) Catchings--the second of their three children. He served in the US Army during World War II from 1944 to 1946. He attended Weatherford College and was a graduate of what is now Texas A&M University Kingsville. In 1955, at age 29, he married Luella Ann Goertz in Travis County, TX. They had no children. Buford retired from the US Department of Agriculture--Soil Conservation Service in 1982.

Buford, a fiddle player, was most known for being a founding member of the Rockne Playboys band in 1946. The band played thousands of engagements across the state of Texas and were known for their Texas swing and western style. They had a large following in the Bastrop County area and beyond.
