North Bend's Mrs. Shroat is 90 Years Old May 28, 1969

NORTH BEND---Mrs. Mary E. Shroat is celebrating her 90th birthday today and will be on her way to Lock Haven to visit a niece and nephew, Miss Pauline, and Homer Myers, Bellefonte Avenue, where old friends will greet her at an annual birthday party arranged for "Aunt Mary."
Something like 50 of the family met in in North Bend at the summer place of her son, George Schroat of Lock Haven, on Sunday, May 25, to honor her.
It was a very lively occasion for the lively Mrs. Shroat who lives alone, next door to her oldest son, John E. Shroat, and does her own housework, despite the bedevilment of arthritis that does hobble older folk.
Mary E. Shroat is the last surviving of the four sisters in her own family. She married Harvey B. Shroat in the First united Methodist Church in Lock Haven in 1899. They lived in that city until 1912 when they moved to North Bend to Judge Crawford's farm.
Mr. Shroat, who had been a deliveryman employed by Zimmerman's in Lock Haven, farmed here for many years. He died in the 1930's.
Twelve children were born to the Shroats, of whom six, John E. and Harry D. (Frip), of North Bend; George, Lock Haven; William, Mrs. Charles Musselman, and Mrs. Walter Watt of Farwell, survive.
Mrs. Shroat is "Grandma" to nine grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
She continues in frequent correspondence with relatives of her father, Daniel Surek, in Germany. Since she doesn't read German, she welcomes translations read to her by Mrs. William Hook of Renovo, a native of Germany.
The late Daniel Surek spoke seven languages and was an interpreter at the Clinton County Courthouse until his death, his family recalls.
Mrs. Shroat is a member of the United Methodist Church. She celebrates her natal day with another North Bend friend, Leroy Heaps, who hasn't caught up to her in the number of his years.
Everyone here is wishing Mrs. Shroat a happy birthday.
