Longtime Oak Creek resident Josephine Angle passed away June 1, 2004, at Doak Walker Care Center. She was 103.

Josephine was born Aug. 17, 1900, in Rock Springs, Wyo., to John and Frances Smith. She was the oldest of seven children.

After traveling across the country, the family settled in Oklahoma, where Josephine grew up and worked as a telephone operator and in a factory that made hand-dipped chocolates.

She met Pat Angle shortly after he returned from serving his country in World War I. They married July 8, 1919.

Pat and Josephine had three daughters, Gladys, Dorothy and Juanita. Josephine also helped raise Lorainne, Pat's daughter from his first wife, who died when Lorainne was just 6 months old.

In 1927, Pat and Josephine moved to Oak Creek, where they raised their children. Josephine continued to live in Oak Creek, the small town she had grown to love, after Pat's death and until March 1, 1989, when she moved into the nursing home now known as the Doak Walker Care Center.

Josephine enjoyed crocheting; she made countless doilies and Afghans, many of which are still enjoyed by her family. She also was an excellent seamstress; she sewed all of her daughters' clothing from patterns she made. Josephine loved to garden and always had one of the most abundant gardens in the neighborhood. Each fall, she spent many days canning and preserving food for the coming long winter.

She seemed to have a green thumb as she was always very successful in growing a variety of flowers and flowering shrubs. She was most content when she was in her yard pulling weeds or tending to her garden. She often was seen walking to town and visiting with friends along the way. Josephine rarely missed her daily walk.

She is survived by one daughter, Gladys Sullivan of Clifton; 11 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.

A service for Josephine was held June 4, 2004, at the Oak Creek Cemetery, where she was interred.
