Vivian Emma Peden was born at the Eli Peden farm home near Gary, South Dakota, May 19, 1924. She was the eldest of eight children born to Mr. Maurice Peden and Pearl Heaton Peden. She attended school in Glenwood District #61 and the Gary Public Schools, graduating valedictorian of her senior class in 1942. During her school years in Gary, she won many music, dramatic and scholarship awards, as well as being pianist for the Gary Methodist Church of which she was a member, for a number of years.

She went to Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa for two years before enlisting in the United States Navy Waves in December 1944. She was a Pharmacist Mate in the Medical Corps. In the fall of 1946 she enrolled at South Dakota State College at Brookings, from which she graduated in 1949, majoring in Zoology.

Following graduation she was employed in Chicago, where she met and married Ira Phillips of Brooklyn, New York. They have four children, Rebecca Rose, a graduate of the University of Minnesota, now Mrs. Tom Olson of Chicago; Jonathon Peden, a sophomore at Illinois State University at Normal; Sarah Ruth, a freshman at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana; and Adam Maurice, age 11 at home.

Vivian Philips was a research assistant for the Dight Institute for Human Genetics at the University of Minnesota for 18 years prior to moving to Evanston in 1970. (While with the Institute, she did a great deal of research and editing of manuscripts for publication, of which one 600 page volume has recently come off the press, entitled Psychoses: A Family Study, by Reed, Hartley, Anderson, Johnson and Phillips.) Also while living in Minneapolis she served on the Board of Directors of the Planned Parenthood Organization for 3 years as well as being a volunteer worker for that same period of time.

In Evanston, she was employed by the United Methodist Board of Pensions as Dept. Manager in Pension Records until February of 1973 when failing health caused her resignation.

On November 8, at 10:00 A.M. at the age of 49, Vivian passed away at the Evanston Hospital, after nearly 4 1/2 years of surgery and treatment for abdominal cancer.

She was preceded in death by her father Maurice Peden in 1955, and an infant brother Dwight Elmer, in 1937. Surviving are her husband Ira, and their four children, Becca, Jon, Sarah and Adam; her mother Mrs. Pearl Peden of Gary and 6 brothers and sisters; Dr. Wendell Peden of Brookings; Edythe (Mrs. William Cascini) of Lincoln, Nebr., Arlyce (Mrs. Roger Oviatt) of Rapid City; Mildred (Mrs. Charles Bullock) of Minneapolis; Ruth (Mrs. Shannon Whipp) of Ames, Iowa; and David Peden of South Charleston, W. Va.

Memorial services were held at Evanston, Illinois at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 10, 1973. On Monday, November 12, the family gathered at Clear Lake, South Dakota for a prayer service followed by the burial at the Gary, South Dakota cemetery. Hardy - Eng Funeral Chapels were in charge of the arrangements.

The Reverend Dr. William Cascini of Lincoln, Nebraska conducted all of the services. The pallbearers were her two brothers and four brothers-in-law; Wendell and David Peden, Shannon Whipp, Charles Bullock, Roger Oviatt and William Cascini. Pam Peden played organ selections.

Other relatives attending from a distance were Ira's sister, Bernice (Mrs. Jules Raye) from Valley Stream, New York, Mrs. Frances Rabeay, Taunton, Minnesota, Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Cole of Mankato, Minnesota. Friends in attendance were from Minneapolis, Minn., Mitchell and Watertown and Canby, Minnesota.
