Mary Lillian Thompson was born November 12, 1875 near Brighton in Polk County, Missouri, the daughter of Elijah E Thompson and Louisa M Lee Thompson. In 1877 the family moved to northern Stone County and lived in a house located on the Old Wire Road near McCullah Spring. As a young lady she liked to ride a horse, side-saddle, and on one occasion prior to her marriage, she was thrown from her horse and suffered a dislocated shoulder. She had recurring problems with the shoulder for a long time afterward. Her father, Elijah Eagleton Thompson, was a soldier in the Confederate army of Missouri who lost his right arm in the siege of Vicksburg. In spite of his disability he supported his family as a farmer.
Her mother was Louisa Malvina Lee, the youngest child of Samuel and Mary Lee. Both sides of her family were originally from Blount County, Tennessee. Her siblings were Ursula, Walter and twin brothers, Sheldon, who died at age 7 months of an intestinal disorder, and Weldon, who died at age 20 of typhoid. On Feb 14, 1900 Mary Lillian Thompson was married to Lemuel Allen Springer, at the home of her parents by the Rev. John T Crumpley. They were the parents of eight children: Weldon Ralph, James Elijah, Jennie Lucelle, Mary Ferrel, Ursula Irene, Louisa Grace, Edgar Allen, and Phyllis Maxine. She was a homemaker and lived most of her married life in Stone County. After her husband's death she made her home with family members, most of the time with her youngest daughter Maxine in Hurley. In October, 1957 while visiting her daughter Lucelle in Aurora, she suffered a heart-attack from which she did not recover, and she died on December 13, 1957 in Aurora. Her funeral services were held in Hurley on December 15,1957 and burial was in the Short Cemetery. She had 32 grandchildren.
