They moved to Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan for a short time in the late 1930's, and Carol's father worked there as a millwright in steel mill. The family then moved back to Madison County, Illinois in the early 1940's where he worked as a pipefitter at the Sinclair Oil Refinery, and her parents ran a small store in Wanda.

Carol graduated on 04 Jun 1951 from Roxana High School in Roxana, Madison County, Illinois.

She took a job in St. Louis, Missouri with Rice-Stix where she worked for a few years. She then spent 6 months in Europe, before accepting a position in the accounting department at Owens-Illinois Glass Company in Madison County. She worked there for several years.

Carol married Harold Edward Schaberg on 14 Dec 1963 at Eden United Church of Christ in Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois. Carol's sister-in-law, (Living) Porter, was her matron of honor, and Carol's first cousin, Rae Peyton, was the bridesmaid at the wedding. Harold was a long-time employee at the Shell Oil refinery in Roxana, Illinois. He retired in 1991 after 29 years as an asbestos insulator and foreman.

Harold did carpentry work on the side and built a beautiful home for the family in Carpenter, Illinois. He then used his amazing skills to build another home when they moved to Kendall Hill. He eventually built a third home for them, also in Kendall Hill.

Carol and Harold loved to take family road trips every summer. They would gather their 3 young children, Carol's mother, Edna, and Aunt Helen in the station wagon and head off on another memorable adventure.
