Wolfgang Bergter, along with fellow POW Erwin Stöckl/ Stoeckel left their camp on Adams River, near Sioux Narrows, Ontario, in November 1944 and did not return. Some think they were escaping, but they were likely just exploring the woods around the camp as escape attempts at the onset of winter were uncommon. Either way, they appear to have gotten lost and froze to death. Their bodies were discovered by the Ontario Provincial Police the following spring. Note that the date of death reflects when they were discovered, as the actual date of death was unknown.
