Joe Shumate, 67, died peacefully on April 4, 2002, from his battle with cancer.

He was born on November 18, 1935, in Bloom, OH and served the U. S. Navy as a Senior Chief Petty Officer before retiring. He was a computer analyst for a major Northern Virginia company at the time of his death.

He is survived by his loving wife, Tina Shumate; two children, William M. Shumate and his wife Tracie of Chesapeake, VA and Jeffrey A. Shumate and his wife Lori of Virginia Beach, VA; one grandchild, William A. Shumate of Chesapeake, VA; two sisters, Anna Mae Blanton of Bonaire, GA and Mary Overby of Deepwater, MO and a brother, William O. of South Webster, OH.

A graveside service will be held in South Webster, OH where he will be laid to rest on Monday, April 9, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. The family requests, in his memory, memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel is handling local arrangements.
