OBITUARY - Mrs. Mary Deau Passes at Laona

LAONA, Wis.---Funeral services were held this morning at the St. Leonard Catholic church for Mrs. Mary [Grandeau] Deau of Laona who passed away at her home Thursday from virus pneumonia and copications of old age. She celebrated her 95th birthday Nov. 1.

Mrs. Deau was born Nov. 1, 1855, in Canada, and was married to Alexander Deau in !873. She was one of the three remaining survivors of the Peshtigo fire of 1871, coming from that city to Laona in 1901.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Anna Harris and Mrs. Laura Martin of Laona, Mrs. Della Thompson of Two Rivers and Mrs. Lillian Draeger of Iron Mountain, Mich.; two sons, Alex and Arthur of Kenosha, 22 grandchildren and 62 great grandchildren. Her husband and two daughters, Mamie and Lizzie, and two sons, John and Paul, preceded her in death. The Rev. S. Stern officiated at the services and burial was in the Laona cemetery.

Alice Harris Kaatz shares Mary's story of the Peshtigo WI 1871 fire:"Grandma Deau told us how her dad got heavy winter coats and her mother got the other children. They all ran into the river, put the wet coats over their heads and [she told us] how hot the river water was. That's all that kept them alive. Grandma was 16 years old."
