When Alex was 4 years old he and his parents moved to Garden Island, Kingston, Canada, and then immigrated to Peshtigo, Marinette Co., WI about 1865. His family survived the Oct 1871 Peshtigo Fire where 1,000's died. To save his children Alex's father lowered them into a well with only a small amount a water at the bottom. In 1900 Alex and family moved to Carter, and then in 1901 to Laona to work at the new Connor's Mill.
