Civil War Union Officer. Charles E. Cross entered West Point from his native Massachusetts in 1856. Ranked 2nd in standing, he was graduated in 1861 with the May class. He was commissioned a 1st lieutenant on August 6, 1861 which correlated with him being assigned to the United States 1st Battalion of Engineers. He was promoted to captain on March 3, 1863. He was brevetted colonel posthumously on June 5, 1863 "for gallant and meritorious service while assisting to throw a bridge across the Rappahannock at Fredericksburg in the face of the enemy". It was during this action that he was killed-in-action. A commanding officer said "his life was worth more than a thousand bridges".
