Lillian I. Estes, age 86, of Little Falls, MN, passed away Thursday, August 27, 2009, at St. Gabriel's Hospital in Little Falls, MN.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 31, 2009 at Emblom-Brenny Funeral Service, 900 – 1st Street SE, Little Falls, MN, with Rev. Keith Thompson officiating. A luncheon will be held immediately following the service in the Community Room of the funeral home. Interment will be in Vaale Cemetery near Brainerd, MN.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 30, 2009 at Emblom-Brenny Funeral Service, 900 – 1st Street SE, Little Falls, MN.
Visitation will continue Monday at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
Lillian I. Estes was born Lillian Inga Thorson on March 6, 1923 in Brainerd, Minnesota, the daughter of Thomas & Mary (Thompson) Thorson. She grew up in rural Brainerd where she attended country school and graduated from Brainerd High School, Class of 1941. Following her schooling, she worked at JC Penney in Brainerd and in St. Cloud for a company that produced aircraft parts for World War II planes. She then worked at the VA Hospital in St. Cloud. On March 6, 1946 she was united in marriage to Stewart Estes at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple moved to a farm west of Northwood, Iowa and farmed there until 1957. At that time, the couple moved to Deer Park, Wisconsin and farmed there until 1976 at which time they moved to Little Falls, MN. While living in Wisconsin, Lillian worked as a nurse's aide at the hospital in Amery, Wisconsin. Stewart & Lillian farmed in the Little Falls area until Stewart's death in 1986. Lillian continued living on the farm for a few years and then moved to Brainerd. In May 2008, she moved to Pine Grove Manor in Little Falls.
Lillian enjoyed Bible Studies, gardening, reading, watching the Animal Planet Channel on TV, crossword puzzles and drinking coffee and sharing memories with family and friends, especially Dorothy & Leroy Thompson (cousins on her mother's side). She was a faithful member of many churches where she lived throughout her life, most recently the Living Hope Assembly of God Church in Little Falls.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, the late Maynard (Beverly) Estes of Northwood, IA, Stanley (June Varner) Estes of Little Falls, MN, E. Dean (Mary) Estes of Phoenix, AZ, Rose Estes and Thomas (Mary) Estes of Little Falls, MN; special son-in-law, Kendall (Cheryl) Winegar of Hudson, WI; sisters, Tillie (the late Lyman) Dale of Brainerd, MN and Ruby (the late Raymond) Tautges of Brainerd, MN; sister-in-law, Eleanor (the late Stewart) Thorson of Cuba, Missouri; 20 grandchildren; many great and great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas & Mary (Thompson) Thorson (both in February, 1986); husband, Stewart Estes (January 13, 1986); son, Maynard Estes (February 22, 2004); grandson, Robert Estes (December 6, 2006); brother, Stewart Thorson and brothers-in-law, Lyman Dale and Raymond Tautges.
