Born near Greencastle. Began a warfare on whiskey. A mob was dispersed and ready to hang him but luckily George escaped that atrocity. George played a role in the abolition of slavery and played a hand at writing the NC slavery law at the end of the Civil War. He had activities as a State Senator. He served the Guilford charge for 51 years. Welker's Crossroads, Julian NC, was in the southeast corner of Guilford Co. His farm was near Mt. Hope Church. He preached 5061 sermons, 518 funerals, married 127 couples, confirmed 820, and baptized 945 people. He first married Abigail 'Abby' Mason of Princeton, MA, they had children and when she died he married Abby's sister Louisa the same year, they had children, and when she died at age 30 he went and retrieved a third Mason sister Myra, whom died before he could marry her. George went on to marry Emily Jane Corsbie and they too had children. George preached at Brick Church from 1842 until 1893 as well as leading other churches. George had only one eye and as you can see in my photo of him wearing glasses. He had a strong german accent. There was no toleration for anyone speaking during his sermons. He was a fighter but also a compassionate and gentle man.
