Joseph M.Brownback as officer in the Millikin National bank for 38 years, died at his home at 1305 W.Main street this morning after an illness that had been growing more serious for several years. He was 82 years old. He was found dead by his nurse, Mrs.Lou Bowesrock, at 9:15 oclock this morning. On visits to his room at 3 and and 5:15 am she had found him resting comfortably. He apparently died in his sleep as there was no indication of suffering. His physician said he though death had come two or three hours before. Mr. Brownback had been unable to perform his duties as vice president and director of the Millikin bank since Oct. 1932 and resigned both offices a years ago. His illness was due to a complication of diseases, including hardening of the arteries and kidney trouble. Monday he had been in better condition than at any time in the last four months and continued to improve Tuesday. His physician said today he believed death was due to failure of his heart, weakened by the long illness.
Mr. Brownback was born Oct. 16, 1853, in Shelbyville, the last of seven children born to Henry and Rebecca Brownback, who had moved from Pennsylvania to Illinois in 1850. Mr. Brownback came to the Millikin National bank on invitation of James Millikin, as a partner in the institution in July 1896, purchasing some of the stock of the late Parke Hammer, who died early in that year. When the bank was organized as the Millikin National bank Mr. Brownback was appointed assistant cashier. He later became cashier and vice president in turn and retained the office of vice president and director until he resigned in Oct. 1934. Mr. Brownback was one of the original trustees of the James Millikin estate and was active in the affairs of the James Millikin university during the early years of its existence.
