Carie Louisa Durland was born at Gales, Illinois, February 15, 1882. She was married to Frank Houck of Carbon, Iowa New Year's Eve, 1877 at Sedalia, Missouri. To this union was born nine children, two of the children, Harvey C. Houck and Mrs. Mattie L. Brenton having preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Frank Houck of Decatur, Illinois, and seven children, three sons, Herman H. Houck of Decatur, Illinois, John A. Houck of LeRoy, Kansas, Charles E. Houck of Seattle, Washington, and four daughters, Mrs. Nellie Wyckoff of Mt. Etna, Iowa, Mrs. Lotta L. Dotson of Grant, Iowa, Mrs. Bessie E. Frederick of Akron, Colorado, and Mrs. Gladys E. Pierson of Decatur, Illinois. One half brother, Edwin LeRoy Frasier of Quincy, Illinois, and one half sister, Mrs. Nettie M. Lane of Enid, Oklahoma, also survive her. She also leaves to mourn her loss a host of relatives and friends. He husband, Frank Houck, was too feeble to come. Also one son, Charles E. Houck and one daughter, Mrs. Bonnie F. Frederick were unable to come.
Mrs. Houck united with the Methodist Church in her early childhood and has been in our Masters service all through her life. She worked in Lincoln Center, teaching a young girls class and the Bible class over a period covering nearly a quarter of a century. Wherever she has lived her first thought has always been to affiliated herself and her family with some church. Hers was a rare and beautiful character. Her noble character has drawn many friends to her everywhere she has gone. Anyone who has been associated with her has been left richer by the education. Her life was one long service to her God and her loved ones. No matter what trials came to her, and they were many, she was always happy and cheerful. She was a wonderful mother, always pointing out the way of righteousness to her children. She thought always of others more than herself. One of her greatest joys in her last years, besides her church work, was working among her flowers and she was looking forward this spring to the time when she could be among her flowers. One of the ways in which she communed with her God was through one of the beauties of nature, her flowers. Her passing leaves sweet memories with her children and all who knew her.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, at 2:00 p.m. from the Lincoln Center Church conducted by Rev. Frank Moore. Interment was made in the Lincoln Center Cemetery.
