RAPID CITY - Bobby Lee Withrow, 70, of Rapid City, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at home after a short battle with cancer.

Bobby was born March 27, 1931, in Farmersville, Texas, to Alvin and Roxie (Regan) Withrow. He graduated from Farmsville High School in 1948. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Navy and served on active duty for four months, then changed to the Reserve, where he remained for six years. In 1952, he graduated from East Texas State in Commerce, Texas, to become a high school business teacher. Instead of teaching, he went to New Mexico to work for the Western Oil Well Co.

In 1954, Bobby changed from U.S. Navy Reserve to U.S. Air Force pilot training. He was in training at Lackland AFB, Texas, and Malden, Mo., and finally graduated as a 2nd lieutenant on Aug. 31, 1955, at Vance AFB in Enid, Okla. While in Enid, he met Myrlin Lively, who was in nurses training there. They married on Feb. 6, 1960, in Dallas, Texas.

Their first station was Offutt AFB, Omaha, Neb., where Bobby was in the 34th Air Refueling Squadron flying the KC-135. He also spent a short time at Pease AFB, New Hampshire, in the KC-97. While at Offutt, two daughters were born to Bobby and Myrlin, Leesha, on April 1, 1961, and Sharon, on April 30, 1962. In July of 1963, the family was transferred to Walker AFB, Roswell, N.M. On Dec. 15, 1966, Todd joined the family. January 1967 found the family moving to Plattsburg AFB, N.Y.

March through May 1968 Bobby spent in Thailand, only to receive a full transfer to Vietnam in December 1968. Before leaving in December, the family moved to Sherman, Texas, where Myrlin and the children stayed for the year of 1969 while Bobby was in Nam.

January 1970 found the Withrows on their way to Castle AFB, Calif. Bobby was an instructor pilot in KC-135s there. In July 1973, he was transferred to Ellsworth AFB, S.D., to be the Operations Officer and then squadron commander of the 28th Air Refueling Squadron. After he left the Tanker Squadron, he was in various other jobs at Ellsworth.

On Feb. 1, 1982, Bobby retired with 34 years of serving his country and 6,800 hours of flying time. After retirement, he held various jobs such as: substitute teacher, working for Black Hills Workshop, Black Hills Co-Op placement of students and, finally, driving every other morning for Airborne Express.

Upon arriving at EAFB, Bobby got his family into the horse business and remained there for the rest of this life. He was an active member in the EAFB riding club and served as president and board member. He loved team roping and participated in the sport as a heeler.

Bobby belonged to the pilot organization of Daedalians, Elks Lodge 1187, Western South Dakota Buckaroos, Black Hills Roping Club and Hermosa Roping Club. With all his activities, his favorite thing was being with and playing with his children and grandchildren.

Bobby is survived by his wife, Myrlin of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Leesha and Jon Orick of Sacramento, Calif., Sharon and Art Reistad of Minot, N.D.; one son and fiancee, Todd Withrow and Jennifer Maher of Albuquerque, N.M.; one sister and brother-in-law, Jeraldine and Mel King of Lovington, N.M.; a niece, Chaney Rogers; and a nephew, Chris Coffman; four grandsons, Christian and Kyle Reistad, Jonah and Noah Withrow; and three granddogs, Sydney, Cassie and C.J. Orick.

A gathering with the family will be on Friday, April 6, 2001, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Behrens Funeral Home. Memorial services, with military honors, will be Saturday, April 7, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. in the Behrens Funeral Home Chapel, with Bob Bennett and Charlie Tutor officiating.

Inurnment will be Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at 1:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Bobby was always willing to help anyone. He was a classy, fun-loving, happy man who loved a good joke, goof times, e-mail and computer games. He will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him.
