Mary A. Hales, was born July 26, 1828 in Gallia County, Ohio and died October 30, 1907, aged 79 years, 3 months, and 4 days. At the age of 10 years she came with her parents to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and was united in marriage to Rev. Thomas Gaskell in May 7, 1845 in Muscatine, Iowa. In 1863 they came to Adams County and settled near Quincy. The husband and father died February 2, 1878 at the age of 54 years. After his death, Mrs. Gaskill sold the farm and went west where she spend a few years, returning later to Adams County and with her son settled in Lincoln Township, near Hayes, where she made her home. Her family consisted of eleven children, seven preceded her in death. Those living are Mrs. Sophronia Collins of Ft. Worth, Texas; Mrs. Marlette Weller of Wray, Colorado; Mrs. Emma Gammel of Hepner, Oregon, and Sanford H. Gaskell, at whose home the deceased had the tender care. The deceased also leaves one brother, Rev. F. P. Hales of Winfield, Kansas and one sister, Salina Stubbs of Chillicothe, Missouri. Mother Gaskell was converted at an early age and united with the M. E. Church, in which she proved a faithful member till death. The funeral was conducted from her late residence and interment made in Oakland Cemetery at Quincy.
