Obituary of Mary Statler Sproat Hillegass
Birth: 16 NOV 1807 Death: 17 MAY 1901 in Reading, Pennsylvania Burial: Schellsburg Cemetery, Schellsburg, Bedford, Pennsylvania Note: Obituary from the Bedford Gazette, May 24, 1901: Mrs. Mary Hillegass, who was a resident of New Buena Vista until a few years ago, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles K. Hillegass, in Reading, on May 17. The deceased was aged about ninety-five years. Her remains were brought to New Buena Vista Monday night and interred in the Schellsburg cemetery on Tuesday. Mrs. Hillegass, whose maiden name was Statler, was married twice. Her first husband, Hugh Sproat, died many years ago leaving three children, James Sproat, of Tipton, Ia.; Mrs. Amanda Hillegass, of Reading and Mrs. Mary Sproat, living in Missouri. Mrs. Sproat then later married Jacob B. Hillegass, of New Buena Vista, who was for a long time proprietor of the Buena Vista House, and who died in 1891. Mrs. Hillegass was one of the oldest residents of Bedford county until her removal to Reading. She was familiarly known as "Grandmother Hillegass" to the people of the western part of the county.
