Howard Dean Hawkins, age 57, of 406 Tilley Road, Laurel Springs, NC, died Tuesday evening, August 25, 2009, at his home. He was the son of the late Hiram H. and Georgia Virginia Cox Hawkins. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Turner Hawkins of the home; three step-sons, Stanley Wyatt of Ferguson, Tim Wyatt of Purlear and Jonathan Wyatt of Millers Creek; nine step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Rev. Sam E. Hawkins of Bristol, VA, John H. Hawkins of North Wilkesboro and Charles R. Hawkins of Laurel Springs; two uncles, Rev. Jesse Cox of Jefferson and Dean Cox of Sparta; his special canine friend, "Ginger". Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 28th at the Calvary Freewill Baptist Church at Glendale Springs in Ashe County. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral service to lie in state. Burial will follow in the Mt. Zion Cemetery at Piney Creek. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Janet McKnight, 2511 Mountain View Road, Glade Valley, NC 28627.
