"NISKAYUNA - Longtime broadcaster Earle J. Pudney, 87, of Hoover Road, died at home Thursday after a sudden illness. Mr. Pudney was born in Ilion. He began his career in broadcasting in 1932 as an announcer and piano accompanist at WIBX in Utica. In 1935, he joined the Muzak Corp. as a program manager. Subsequently, he was named program director for WATL and later was production manager for WAGA, both in Atlanta. During his tenure in Atlanta, Mr. Pudney was a speaker at Georgia Tech and worked on special events, including the world premiere of 'Gone With the Wind.' In 1939, he was appointed program manager of WBML in Macon, Ga. Later, he was production manager of WIOD in Miami, Fla., where he inaugurated 'Wings Over Miami,' a show of spot interviews with celebrities arriving and departing from Miami Airport. In 1942, Mr. Pudney joined WGY, where he was a longtime announcer, producer and creator of the series 'The FBI in Action.' He later served as supervisor of production, overseeing all programs at WGY and its FM affiliate, WGFM ... His wife, Gertrude Baltzell Pudney, died in 1986. Survivors include three sons, Paul Pudney of Longs, S.C., Jack Pudney of Rotterdam and Lyle Pudney of Niskayuna; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan St., Schenectady, and at 10:30 at Our Lady of Fatima Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Burial will be in New Forest Hill Cemetery, Utica. Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
