Mr. Day, who lived in Temple Hills, was born in Blowing Rock, N.C. He attended Shenandoah College and Conservatory of Music. During World War II, he served in the Navy in the Pacific.
He was a participant in the Navy's V-5 program and transferred to the Meteorology program. He also served in Guam in the South Pacific during World War II. He attended Shenandoah University from 1940 to 1942. He majored in music. He graduated from George Washington University with a Bachelor of Science in Physics in 1952 and he earned a Master's degree in Physics from the University of Maryland in 1962. He was employed at NRL from 1952 to 1989 as a physicist in nucleonics and electronics.
In 1952, he graduated from George Washington University and began his career at the Naval Research Laboratory, where he remained until retirement. He studied at the Institute of Radio Engineers and received a master's degree in physics from the University of Maryland.
Mr. Day had a private pilot's license and was an amateur aircraft pilot.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Thomas Day of Temple Hills; two children, Laurie Anne Day Greene of Fleetwood, N.C., and Angus Howard Day of Otis, Colo.; a brother; a sister; a stepbrother; and four grandchildren.
