Virgil Howard, 72, of Sequim, Wash., passed away May 18, 2009, at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle.
He was born March 22, 1937, in Longview, to Virgil and Elsie (Viuhkola) Howard and grew up on a "float house" in Carrols. Skip graduated from Kelso High School in 1955 and from Lower Columbia College with an Associate of Arts Degree. Skip moved to Kalama in 1971 and raised his family there. He just recently moved to Sequim.
Skip owned a muffler shop in Longview before becoming a tugboat captain for Smith Tug & Barge, which later became Knappton Tug and finally Foss Maritime. He retired in 2000.
He enjoyed his family and friends, keeping in touch with old friends on the phone. Skip had a love for animals and old cars. He had a great sense of humor and was fun-loving and caring. He loved to laugh with his wife and best friend, Jean Howard. She survives him at home. He loved his children very much. They are Dane Howard and Jana Howard, both of Kalama, Tara Fox of Pendleton, Ore., Tanya Weinke of Gresham and Joni Howard of Vancouver. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Jennifer, Tony and Levin, all in Pendleton, Jaden in Kalama and Roman and Coralena, both in Vancouver.
Skip will be missed and never forgotten.
A graveside service will be announced at a later date.
