James M. McFarland, my GGG Grandfather, was born Jan 20, 1795 in Jefferson Co, Tennessee. He was the son of John McFarland b.Feb 28, 1764 in Bedford Co, Virginia and d. July 20, 1820 in Saline Twn., St. Genevieve Co, Mo. and Rebecca Bell b. April 26, 1770 in Augusta Co. Virginia and d. Sept 14, 1816 in Kentucky. They were married July 20, 1786. In 1816, James and his family moved to eastern Mo., where along the way he met Jane Jackson b. Feb. 5, 1801 in Kentucky. She died May 14, 1872 in Fannin Co., Texas. They were married Dec. 1, 1816 in St. Genevieve, Mo. They settled in an area called Saline in St. Genevieve Co. along with all the other relatives who made the journey. This is where their daughter, my GG Grandmother, Rebecca McFarland was born Oct 3, 1826. In Oct 1836, the family decided that they would move to Texas. They arrived in what would later be Fannin Co., Texas in Sept 1837. James applied for a land grant of 1280 acres from The Republic of Texas. James and his oldest son, Jackson enlisted as volunteers in Captain Issac Lyday`s company of Texas Rangers. In 1838 James McFarland was granted citizenship in The Republic of Texas. He formally received his land grant in 1845. Anson Jones, the last President of the Republic of Texas, signed the grant. James was one of the early justices of the peace and a land commissioner for Fannin Co. He resided on his farm near Ladonia until his death on Oct 18,1871. James is my Sons of the Republic of Texas ancestor. GDC Information from Mary Helen Haines
