Businessman.
Jonathan Sawyer, a wool flannel manufacturer magnate and founder of F.A.B. Sawyer, built some of the old mills in Dover, New Hampshire. His son Charles was Governor of New Hampshire from 1887 to 1889. Jonathan died in 1891. His 26 room Italianate mansion built on 17 acres in Civil War days at a cost of $250,000 appears on he & his wife's memorial. The mansion was located at 47 Central St. in Dover, New Hampshire, but was torn down to make room for a fast food restaurant when a highway went through. Jonathan Sawyer moved his family to New Hampshire when his son, the future Governor, was nine years old.
