Opal McDonald, 88 of What Cheer died Monday, Oct. 16 2006, in Pleasant Park Estates in Oskaloosa.

Afuneral service was held Thursday, Oct. 10, at Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer with the Rev. Frances Baumert officiating. Interment was in Sixteen Cemetery near Thornburg. A memorial has been established in her name.

She was born Jan. 3, 1918, in Newburg, the daughter of Benjamin and Alice Shannon Jackson. She attending school in Malcom until her mother died and she stayed home to care for her siblings. She was united in marriage with Oscar McDonald on March 28, 1936, in Tama. They resided in Barnes City for a short while, then in 1943 moved to What Cheer.

She dedicated her life to raising her children although enjoyed several hobbies and earned many ribbons at the Keokuk County Fair for her craft and sewing projects. She was a member of the What Cheer Baptist Church.

She is survived by five sons, James McDonald of Mount Pleasant, Joe McDonald of Rock Falls, Ill, Franklin McDonald of Barnes City, Michael McDonald of What Cheer and Richard McDonaldof Porter, Texas; four daughters, Betty Richburg of Waco, Texas, Susan Durian of Oskaloosa, Alice Sherwood of Washington and LouiseMary Pfannecbecker of Webster; two brothers, Wilbur Jackson of Gilman and Benjamin Jackson of Cresco; tree sisters Mary Hautekeete of Grinnell, Frances Langholf of Albuquerque, N.M., and Agnes Williams of Eldora; 21 grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sons Carl and Jerry McDonald; one sister Dorothy Jackson, one brother Frank Jackson and two grandsons.

Opal lived for raising her children. She enjoyed gardening, canning, making clothes and afghans, craft and sewing projects that won her many ribbons at county fairs. She also enjoyed word search puzzles.
