Berdyne Brocklehurst, 84, of La Crosse and formerly of Stoddard, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, January 10, 2012, surrounded by her loving family at her home.
She was born February 16, 1927, in West Chicago, Ill., to Raymond and Allie (Guist) Ward. After graduating from Viroqua High School, she graduated from the Vernon County Teachers College in 1959. Berdyne then attended the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse to extend her teaching credentials. She married Robert Brocklehurst on February 8, 1945, at Grace Episcopal Church in Madison, Wis. Berdyne was employed by the DeSoto School District for 26 years, first as an upper elementary teacher for seven years at Ferryville Elementary and later as school secretary at Stoddard Elementary for 19 years. In 1990, mom and dad helped start the first franchised Culver's Restaurant in Baraboo, Wis., and in 1994, they opened the Culver's Restaurant on the south side of La Crosse, were she enjoyed meeting and greeting guests.
Survivors include three children, Jerry (Juanita) Brocklehurst of Viroqua, Wis., Karen (Tom) Wakefield of Wisconsin Dells, and Marcia (Bernard) Trussoni of Genoa, Wis.; five grandchildren, Joe (Lori) Wakefield of Merrill, Wis., Jeff Wakefield of La Crosse, Gabe (Heather) Trussoni of La Crosse, Adam Trussoni of Genoa, Amy (Joe) Ammerman of Valrico, Fla.; 11 great-grandchildren, Emmalee and Wyatt Wakefield, of Wisconsin Dells, Sadie, Haven and Brock Wakefield, of Merrill, Alyssa, McKena, Faith, Hope, and Zayden Ammerman, of Valrico, Fla., and Samuel Trussoni of La Crosse; and two nephews, Scott and Kevin Ward.
Berdyne was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 61 years on July 27, 2006; and her brother, Seward (Myra) Ward.
Memorial services will be Saturday, January 14, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, (Woodruff Chapel), 4239 Mormon Coulee Rd., La Crosse. Pastor Steve Terpstra and Pastor Ben Terpstra will officiate. Private family burial will be in Stoddard Village Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
