Rev. Matthew Hau was buried on Ausgust 30, 1900, from the residence of Mrs. August Brack, 1617 East Baltimore Street. Interment was in Bonnie Brae Cemetery. A requiem mass was celebrated in the chapel of St. Joseph's Hospital, where Father Hau died on Tuesday, August 28, 1900, from consumption. Rev. Henry Nagengast was the officiating clergyman.
Father Hau was born 32 years in Bavaria, and at the age of twelve, he came to this country alone. He entered St. Vincent's College, Allegheny, Pa. He went to Belmont, N.C., where he completed his studies for the priesthood, in the Benedictine Order, under Bishop Haid.
He was ordained at the age of 23 years and returned to Bavaria, where he celebrated his first mass in the Catholic church, in the little town of his nativity. For two years, he was stationed at Newbern, N.C.
About four months ago, his health began to decline and he came to Baltimore, Md., entering St. Joseph's Hospital, where he remained until he died.
