Genie Summers, former actress, singer and dancer, resident of Phoenix since 1980, peacefully passed away at Silver Star Assisted Living on August 19th, 2009 from COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) at the age of 81. Genie was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on February 11th, 1928 to Lonnie and Mae Bloxom. Her sister, Metta Mae, was born a year and a half earlier. Genie excelled in ballet dancing from age 4, and became a performer at an early age. She was discovered by Bob Hope as he toured Shreveport and was offered a modeling contract that commenced her career. She was under contract to MGM appearing in "The Merry Widow" with Lana Turner, and as a featured water dancer in films of Esther Williams such as "Million Dollar Mermaid" and "Skirts Ahoy". Later she was a choreographer and lead dancer at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas. Genie trained in legal administration, holding many high level positions over the years at law firms, medical offices, and large corporations. At the same time she pursued community theatre in Phoenix and performed in starring roles in shows such as "On Golden Pond", "Steel Magnolias", and "The Glass Menagerie" along with many, many other noted performances. Genie led a long, active, colorful life and was a very devoted member of the Phoenix Baha'i Community as a member of the Roses of Love Choir. She is survived by three daughters, Barbara Sand (John) Martino, Diana (Gary) Kincart, and Gina Mendello; two grandsons and a granddaughter and two great-grand daughters. She especially loved her grand-dogs Kylie & Sugar-Bear, and her grand-cats Jet and Sable.
