Emmett Eugene Culpepper, a resident of Prineville, passed away on Saturday August 20, 2005, at Pioneer Memorial Hospital.

He was 78 years old. Emmett was born in Eminence, Missouri on April 6, 1927, the son of Francis and Mahala (Hurt) Culpepper.

He attended school in Sisters, Oregon and then Prineville High School.

He joined the United States Coast Guard and served overseas, completing his service on June 8, 1946.

Mr. Culpepper returned and completed his high school education at Prineville High School.

Emmett married Shirley J. Brewer in Prineville, Oregon on June 30, 1951.

He was employed in Mitchell, Oregon and Prineville as a mill worker.

Culpepper worked for a time greasing logging equipment and from 1961 to 1963 he worked construction in Ogden, Utah.

He delivered oil for Lewis Oil from 1963 to 1970. Emmett and his family moved to Klamath Falls, Oregon in 1970 where he began work as a carpenter on the bridge crew for the state of Oregon. He eventually was promoted to foreman and retired in 1990. Emmett and his wife returned to Prineville in 2002.

Emmett enjoyed all types of fishing, hunting, residential carpentry, furniture making and helping his family. He was a troop leader with the Boy Scouts of Klamath Falls, Oregon. He was also active in Babe Ruth Baseball as head of umpires in Klamath Falls League. He and his family square danced together with the Sagebrush Shufflers of Prineville as well as many other square dance groups. He belonged to the American Legion Post #29 and the Elks Club of Prineville.

Emmett is survived by: his wife Shirley Culpepper of Prineville; his two sons Gary and his wife Robyn Culpepper and David and his wife Andrea Culpepper of Hood River, Ore.; two daughters, Vicky and her husband Vern Banta of Prineville and Dianna and her husband Bob Thomas of The Dalles, Ore.; one brother Bob Culpepper of Bend, Ore.; and two sisters Opal Rekow of Newport, Oregon and Grace Williams of Prineville. Emmett is also survived by 10 grandchildren, a great-granddaughter, Olivia Carpenter, niece Tammy Culpepper Wagner of New York and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Annie Hight. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 24, 2005, at the Juniper Haven Cemetery. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to Pioneer Memorial Hospice 1201 N.E. Elm, Prineville, Oregon 97754. Arrangements are in the care of the Prineville Funeral Home.
