Anchorage resident Barbara Jane Gill , 68, died July 29, 2008, at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage. A funeral Mass was at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, 3900 Wisconsin St., in Anchorage.

Barbara was born July 10, 1940, in Little Neck, N.Y., to Charles and Janet Cordes. She graduated from St. Agnes High School in 1958. She earned her nursing degree from Flushing Hospital in New York. She married Russell Gill on Aug. 16, 1968, in Anchorage. She moved to Alaska in 1964. She worked at Presbyterian Community Hospital in Anchorage until she went to work for Dr. Dick Peterson at The Children's Clinic. She then became a homemaker raising her four children. She began her 32-year battle with breast cancer in 1976 which lead to her 13 years of volunteer work with the American Cancer Society. In 1988, she was hired by the organization, where she worked for the next 16 years, retiring in 2004. She is well known for her dedication to Survivor's Day, Relay For Life, both Reach and Road to Recovery, Loan Closet, Run For Men, and many other services American Cancer Society provided throughout the state. In retirement, she became a full time "Nana" to her eight grandchildren. Barb had a love for adventure. In 1991, she participated in the Seward Polar Bear Jump, jumping into the icy water as a cancer survivor. She was always willing to go rollerblading, biking, ice skating, waterskiing, camping, road trips and most of all, hiking to her beloved cabin on Red Shirt Lake and anything her kids and grandkids could come up with. Barb still found time to be a dedicated volunteer for many organizations including Catholic Daughters of America, Girl Scouts of America, and as a founding member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish. In 1994, she was awarded "Woman of the Year" from the Soroptimist International of Anchorage. Her family wrote: "Barb was such an inspiration and support to so many, she was often referred to as 'St. Barbara .' '' The family wishes to thank Dr. Dale Webb and Beth Conklin, ANP, for their years of dedication. The family would also like to extend a thank you to all her dear friends, especially Bonnie Hardy, Jill Gates and Cindy Emery, for the continued love and support.

Survivors include her husband, Russ Gill ; daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne and Ray Hickel, and Erica and Mark Roy; sons, Brian Gill and Jared Gill ; grandchildren, Emma, Jenna, Noah, Max and Aubrey Hickel and Parker, Brody and Jamey Roy, all of Anchorage; sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Larry Gill of Anchorage; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Stefanie Cordes of Little Neck, N.Y.; sister-in-law, Christine Gill of Anchorage; brother-in-law, Greg Gill of Anchorage; and goddaughter, Laura Tsourtsoulas of New York. She will be deeply missed by the extended Gill , Martens and Cordes families.
