LAKE ZURICH - Robert W. Burrow, owner of the former Bob Burrow Chevrolet car dealership in Barrington, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, after a brief illness. He was surrounded by Lois, his wife of 60 years, and their children.
Born March 6, 1926, in Long Beach, Calif., he attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School, where he developed an interest in automobiles. After serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1944 to 1945, he briefly attended the Santa Barbara campus of the University of California. In spring of 1948, he met Lois Eich in Desert Hot Springs, Calif., where her family was vacationing. They married Aug. 21, 1948, at the Riverside Mission Inn in Riverside, which they revisited on their 60th anniversary and recreated their wedding photos.
After working his way up from gas station attendant to auto mechanic to new car salesman to sales manager at Des Plaines Motors, he bought a Chevrolet dealership in Barrington from Ed Bierkness, who became a lifelong friend. Bob Burrow Chevrolet sold and serviced cars from 1960 until he sold the dealership and retired in 1983. During his years as owner of Bob Burrow Chevrolet, he was active with the Barrington Chamber of Commerce and sponsored many local sports teams. After serving as treasurer and secretary, he became chairman of the Board of Illinois New Car and Truck Dealers Association. He also served as finance chairman for Sen. John Graham and served on a commission for former Gov. Jim Edgar.
His passions in life included his family, golfing and boating. He and his wife traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad. Together with his family, he had many memorable adventures, including a vacation on a houseboat on the Mississippi River, several cross-country car trips, and a Caribbean Christmas cruise. After retirement, he and his wife divided their time between homes in Lake Zurich and Fort Myers, Fla.
He is survived by his wife, Lois; his brother, Al; his children, Bruce (Beverly), Bonnie, Donna (Rich) Gallagher and Dale (Nancy); his grandchildren, Kelly, Robert, Ryan (Tiffany), Lynsay, Becky Lynn (Michael), Suzie (Jim) Willard, Mike (Henri) Gallagher; his great-grandchildren; hid sister-in-law, Eunice Granzin of Wisconsin; his brother-in-law, Bob Eich of Arlington Heights; and several nieces and nephews and their many spouses and children.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gertrude and Albert Burrow; a nephew, Greg Burrow; and a niece, Alison Burrow.
A celebration of his life will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at Makray Memorial Golf Club, 1010 S. Northwest Highway, Barrington. A private internment will take place at Mount Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to The Monarch Hospice Foundation, 5435 Bull Valley Road, Suite 304, McHenry, IL 60050.
