Patrolman Douglas Adams was killed in an automobile accident involving two police cruisers.

The two officers were responding to back up an officer who was in a foot pursuit at the time. Their cruisers collided at an intersection, killing Patrolman Adams instantly. The officer in the other cruiser suffered minor injuries. The suspect involved in the foot pursuit was eventually captured. He was convicted of drug trafficking and resisting arrest, and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Patrolman Adams had served with the Elkhart Police Department for just under one year. He was survived by his wife.

The following poem was written by Officer Douglas Adams, of the Elkhart Indiana Police Department, who dedicated the poem to fellow Officer, Cpl. Paul R. Deguch, of the South Bend Indiana Police Department. Corporal Deguch was shot and killed while questioning a suspect. Corporal Deguch had stopped the suspect who was riding a bike in a high drug traffic area and while patting him down the suspect produced a handgun and shot him several times, including once in the head. Corporal Deguch died approximately one hour later at a local hospital. The 16 year old suspect was arrested three hours later and charged with murder. Corporal Deguch is survived by his wife, 2 month old daughter, and 3 and 5 year old sons.

On March 20th 2001, at approximately 7:21 pm, Officer Douglas Michael Adams himself died in the line of duty. Officer Adams and another Elkhart Police Department officer were en-route to back up a fellow officer who was engaged in a foot pursuit nearby. Officer Adams and the other officer collided at the corner of Main & Fraknlin while running lights and sirens. Officer Adams was ejected from his car and was killed instantly. As of this time the suspect from the foot chase has not been apprehended, but leads are being followed. Officer Adams was 2 1/2 weeks from his 1 year anniversary with the department and is survived by his wife. Doug was a dedicated, caring officer who died living his life's dream. He touched all who met him, and we will miss him for all of our days.

He was only a few weeks from his one year anniversary with the Elkhart Police Department.
