He was the son of Otho Gilbert of Compton castle near Dartmouth. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1571 and played an important part in the defence of the country at the time of the Spanish Armada. His halfbrother was Sir Walter Raleigh and his brother was the famous navigator and soldier Sir Humphrey Gilbert.
