He was recruited at age 18 and served until General Lee's surrender.
Charles Fletcher had a fine, mellow, purring voice, and was the leading bass singer of the town of Emporia, Kansas, for nearly 30 years. He sang at every opportunity in theatrical, entertainment and musical productions and choirs. He sang at hundreds of funerals, and when friends of the deceased were scarce, he often doubled to play brass and act as pallbearer, of which he would say,
"I tuck them in and sing them to sleep".
Charles Fletcher and family moved to Brookfield, Missouri around 1868, then to Emporia, Kansas around 1872, then to Cherryvale in October 1901, where they resided the rest of their lives. At Emporia, Charles Fletcher was a railway engineer for the Santa Fe with a run between Topeka and Emporia, and in 1879 he was elected Constable. While working he studied law and was admitted to the Lyon County Bar in September 1879, and to the Montgomery County Bar in 1901. He was elected Justice of the Peace in 1880, and for years he served on all of the committees of public welfare. In Cherryvale, he was elected to the Board of Education in 1904 and re-elected as Chairman in 1906 and 1908. He was appointed Police Judge from 1906 to 1908 and was later elected, serving until his sudden death.
Charles Fletcher was prominent in Kansas Masonry, held a number of offices, and was highly informed on Masonic history and rituals. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and chairman of the inter-denominational Bible class. He also was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic of Cherryvale, and was a charter member of the Emporia post in 1882. He supported the Republican party as ward committeeman for years, and always sat on state and congressional delegations to offer guidance for his party.
At the time of his death, Judge Fletcher was secretary of the Cherryvale Masonic Lodge, secretary of the local chapter of Royal Arch Masons, a member of the Cherryvale Order of Eastern Star, Generalissimo of St. Bernard's Commandery Knights Templar of Independence, Kansas, and a member of Jabod Council Royal and Select Master Masons, Topeka. He was District Deputy Grand Master in 1909, District Deputy Grand High Priest from 1906 to 1909, and Past Worshipful Master of Cherryvale Lodge A.F. & A.M.
The funeral, held at the Presbyterian Church on 25 Nov 1913 at 2:30 in the afternoon, was largely attended, beautiful and impressive. The procession from the Presbyterian Church to Fairfield Cemetery, led by the Sir Knights in full uniform, followed by the Master Masons, members of the Montgomery County Bar, old comrades of the G.A.R, and friends in that order, numbered about 150 people in line, two abreast, a full block in length. Grave rituals were conducted by the Knights Kemplar, with the reading of the beautiful and impressive grave rituals. The services were a fitting tribute of respect to the memory of a consistent Christian gentleman of sterling character who loved his fellow man.
