On August 12, 1911 Officer Edgar Rice was killed while responding to shots fired; a black mill worker Zachariah Walker had tried to rob two foreigners at gun point. Rice was a coal and iron policeman commissioned by the state and a deputy constable. He placed Walker under arrest who resisted and assaulted the officer; during the following fight he shot the officer three times. His end came the next day when he was lynched.
Officer Edgar Rice was survived by his wife Annie Whiteside Rice and five children, Thomas the oldesst was on active duty in the military, Vincent, Harvey, Mamie and Elsie, all were living at home.
On August 17th the funeral for Edgar was held at his home, it is estimated the crowd topped 6,000 and was composed of both blacks and whites. Two ministers officiated and the trolley which ran in front of the home ceased operations during the services. The Brandywine Fire company served as pall bearers. The procession to the Hephzibah cemetary included automobiles, horses, wagons, and carriages, many donated for the funeral by William Worth. He was laid to rest at Hephzibah cememtary in the family plot near his infant son Jefferson.
