Maxine E. Steele, 94, died Aug. 26, 2009, at the Hospice House, Hutchinson.

She was born Feb. 22, 1915, in Lyons, the daughter of Frank W. and Millie Blanch Snodgrass Hubbard.

She was a lifetime Hutchinson resident and a graduate of Hutchinson High School in 1932. She was a homemaker. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church, U.S. Post Office Women's Auxiliary, a member of the former Prosperity E.H.U.

She was an avid gardener and loved flowers. She knitted hundreds of stocking caps for charity.

On June 29, 1940, she married Wayne K. Steele in Hutchinson. He died Nov. 1, 1990.

Survivors include: sons, Steven and wife, Billie, Hutchinson, and David and wife, Jane, Jackson, Mich.; grandchildren, Steve and Candacea Steele, Ft. Collins, Colo., Julie and Brett Mahoney, St. Charles, Mo., Sara and Rich Allen, Okemos, Mich., Renia and Mike Clarkson, Hutchinson, Rebecca and Mike Wells, Fayetteville, Ark., and Lora and Kelly Harper, Wichita; 11 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Jeanette Hettinger.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, with the Rev. Steven Wayne Steele officiating. Friends may call 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.

Memorials may be sent to the Mennonite Manor in care of the mortuary.
