Mrs. John Edens and two of her daughters were among the ten women and children killed when a band of Indians attacked their home on San Pedro Creek near the present day town of Augusta on the night of Oct 18, 1838. Another daughter, one year old Melissa, was rescued by Patsy, a long time family servant. Two other women were seriously wounded but survived. Mrs Edens' husband, John, was one of the four men who were present, yet escaped unharmed. Most of the husbands/fathers had not yet returned after fighting the Kickapoos on Oct 16, just two days before the attack on those gathered for safety at John Edens' home. This attack became known as "The Edens-Madden Massacre".

Mrs. John Edens' maiden name was Pollett-our EDENS famly research has proven this but we have not found her given name. She was the second Mrs. John Edens, owner of the land where the massacre on 18 October 1938 took place.
John Edens is also buried in this cemetery and our family makes a pilgrimage to this cemetery every 3 years. We put up the chain link fence to help protect the makers that remain from wild animals. Most of the markers were stolen about 40 or so years ago & there were many more people buried there from time to time.
