Melvin Allen Small, son of the late James Jasper and Evah Cunningham Small, was born on December 15, 1938 in Norfork, Arkansas. He departed this life on August 7, 2021 in Springfield, Missouri at the age of 82 years, 7 months, and 23 days.
Melvin was a lifetime native of Baxter County. He graduated from Norfork High School in 1956. After graduation, Melvin served his country with the U. S. Navy during the Bay of Pigs Conflict, Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Korean War.
On January 5, 1960, he married the love of his life, Patsy Rand Small. They enjoyed 32 years together.
After a lengthy career with the NAEC, Melvin retired in 1990. Melvin enjoyed spending time with his grandkids, woodworking, fishing on Lake Norfork, White River and Norfork Rivers.
Melvin married Joan Pauley in 2009. They enjoyed traveling with friends and serving the community. Melvin loved to serve others. He was always willing to help someone in need. Melvin served with the VFW Post 7330 and Hospice of the Ozarks, where he took great pride in celebrating and honoring veterans. He also served in his church and was an avid Norfork Panther fan.
Melvin was a member of the Dolph Baptist Church.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Joan; four sons, Terry Small (Glenda) of Mountain Home, David Small (Tammy) of Etowah, Tennessee, Doug Small ( Jamie) of Mountain Home, and Mike Small of Shelbyville, Tennessee; nine grandchildren: Alicia, Kayla, Kristin, Aston, Julie, Ryan, Dustin, Audrey, and Jasper; nine great grandchildren: Brayden, Adelynn, Alyssa, Daxtgn, Marcus, Emery, Annabelle, Jade, and Alexander; three sisters, Zelma Ray Johnson, Anna Fay Harrell, and Mary Jane France, all of Wynne, Arkansas; one step-daughter, Kimberly Williams ( Ben) of Dallas, Texas; and three step-grandchildren. He is also survived by a host of other relatives and many good friends.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Patsy (Rand) Small, one brother, James Small, one sister, Zella May Davis and one granddaughter, Laiken Michelle Small.
Funeral services was August 11, 2021 at 11 am at First Baptist Church in Mountain Home with Pastor Logan Holladay officiating. Burial will be at Hand/Halls Chapel in Jordan, Arkansas, with military honors. Pallbearers: Dale Anthony, Gary Arnold, Richard Hanson, Skip Layne, Lynda Rand, and Tommy Rand.
