William S. Pine was born in New Jersey. He married Ann Thomas on 26 April 1835 at the Third Baptist Church in Philadelphia. His occupation was Hatter. He served in the Pennsylvania Infantry for the Union in the Civil War.

The Aged Door-Tender of the Commercial Exchange Succumbs to Disease
Captain William S. Pine, the venerable door-keeper of the Commercial Exchange, died yesterday morning at his residence, 1340 South Fourth street, at the advanced age of eighty-three years. Captain Pine was taken ill last February, and has been confined to his home ever since. He was first appointed to the position in the Commercial Exchange in 1864 and up to the time of his illness he was never absent a day from his post. In 1831 he started on a five years' cruise around the world in the United States frigate Potomac. At the outbreak of the rebellion he enlisted as a private in the One Hundred and Nineteenth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was afterwards promoted captain. He was widely known in this city for many years past, and belonged to many societies, being a past master of Meridian Sun Lodge No. 158, F. and A. M.
