James married Charlotte Diern in 1868. Their children were: M. Louise (b. @1868), Alfred Milton (b. 10/25/74), Annie L. (b. 09/??/79), Lillie G. (b. 09/??/83), Fannie C. (b. 06/??/85), and Warren M. (b. 12/??/89).

He enlisted in Liverpool Township, Perry County, May 4, 1861, with Co. B, 7th Pa Reserves (36th Pa Inf), at the rank of private. The regiment mustered into Federal service July 27, 1861, in Washington DC. He reenlisted as a Veteran Volunteer in the beginning of 1864. Since the Pennsylvania Reserve Corps ceased to exist when the original members mustered out, on May 31, 1864, he transferred to Co. I, 190th Pa Inf, and was honorably discharged with his company on June 28, 1865.

He had a brother, John Clark Hebel, who served in the same company with him.

(James T. Hebel did not serve with "7 Pa Res Inf CSA." No Northern state had even one regiment in the army of the Confederate States of America, although every Southern state had at least one Union regiment)
