She was born in Carroll County, Indiana to Alfred Augustus and Mary Isabell Roach Briney.

Surviving are two sisters, Margaret Mae Ellis of Frankfort and Mary Jane Bergsma of Lafayette and a brother, Robert Marion Briney of Perkinston, Mississippi.
