He was thought to have moved to Ft. Smith, Arkansas from Texas after murdering someone. A man had given a ring to Shadrach's wife (before they were married). He asked for it back and Shadrach hit him with a double tree and killed him. He left wife and children. His wife had a nervous breakdown and was committed to a sanitarium.
He is supposed to have become overly excited at finding a former suitor of his wife at their home and "tunked" him a little too hard on the head with a whiffle tree and departed immediately for a more favorable climate, dying some years later at Fort Smith, Ark.
