Services Held For Mrs. Maiden, 99, Scott Township's Oldest Citizen

Funeral services for Mrs. Cordelia Maiden, Scott township's oldest citizen were held at the Methodist church Friday afternoon at 1:30. Rev. Richard Rowe had charge of the services and the choir furnished the music. Pallbearers were Harold Adams, Raymond Maiden, Ernest and Charlie Beauchamp, Worthy and Dale Stroman, all grandsons of the deceased. Four granddaughters, Mrs Harold Adams, Mrs. Crystal Davis, Wahneetah Feldman and Mrs. Eleanor Uchtal, had charge of the flowers.
Short service were held at the home at one o'clock, and interment was in the Winfield-Scott Cemetery.
Mrs Maiden died three days after she had celebrated her 99th birthday, which was December 26. Although she had been confined to her bed for more than a year it was not until the night of her birthday that she took a noticeable turn for worse. She failed steadily until the time of her death,
Cordelia K. McDonald was born at Hamilton, Ohio, December 26, 1838, and departed this life at Winfield, Iowa, December 29, 1937, age 99 years and 3 days.
While yet a child she moved with her parents to Indiana where she grew to womanhood and on April 23, 1858 she was united in marriage to David R. Davis , who died in the Civil War, on June 21, 1864. To Mr. and Mrs. Davis were born three children Oliver P., Phoebe and Flora M. all of whom preceded her in death.
In January, 1866 she was united in marriage in Indiana to Jacob Adams. To this union five children were born four daughters and one son; Mrs. Ids Gruver, Mrs. Clara Metzger, Mrs. Lettie White, all of Winfield; George of Columbus Junction and Mrs Maggie Beauchamp deceased. After 10 years of happy married life, Mr. Adams passed away on June 21, 1876.
On September 24, 1877, Mrs. Adams was married again, this time to Mr. William Maiden, at LaGrange, Indiana, who then came to Iowa on a farm 4 1/2 mils northeast of Winfield, Iowa, where he passed away January 24, 1897. To this marriage two children were born, Charles A. of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Mary Custer deceased.
About a year after Mr. Maiden passed away, Mrs. Maiden moved to Winfield, where she resided until her death.
Mrs Maiden enjoyed good health until the last three years, during which time she was lovingly cared for by her daughters. For the last year Mrs. White nursed and cared for her mother, and will be greatly missed by her.
When in her health and strength Mrs. Maiden was a good neighbor and friend to those in need. She loved her house and household and had a large circle of friends. At and early age she united with the membership of the Methodist church and was active in it until her death.
There remains to mourn her departure, a large number of relatives, five generations of whom are in Winfield.
These are three daughters, two sons, 19 grandsons, 13 granddaughters, four great great grandchildren, one brother of Mound City, David; one sister Addie Long of Portland, Oregon, and many other relatives and friends.
During the years of Mrs. Maiden's life a century what changes have come to pass in the world of science and the arts. The manners and methods have all undergone vast changes that not many are permitted to witness; and her experiences would make a most interesting story pictured as they came to her during this long life, she was permitted to live.
Her children never lost interest in her welfare and gave her every attention that could possibly add to her physical comfort and happiness, all of which was deeply appreciated by her and the visits of friends and neighbors was a happy incident in her dally life.
