TOMAH - Robert E. Steele, age 81, of Tomah, passed away Saturday, July 8, 2006, at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born on July 31, 1924, in Sparta, to Ray and Vera (Griswold) Steele. He attended grade school in Warrens and graduated as the Valedictorian of his class from Tomah High School in 1941.

Following high school, he enrolled in the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy. His education was interrupted for a tour of duty with the Eighth Air Force during World War II in which he served as a B17 pilot in the European Theater.

In 1945, he was united in marriage to Arlys Johnson. Upon his discharge from the military, he returned to Madison and graduated from the Wisconsin School of Pharmacy in 1947. That same year he began his employment with the A.M. Peterson Drug Store in Tomah. In 1951, he became owner and President of Steele's Rexall Drug. He operated the drugstore until 1989 when he sold it to his son, Jim Steele.

He took an active part in many other political activities and has served in various capacities on the federal, state, county and local levels.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at 11 a.m. at the GLORIA DEI LUTHERAN CHURCH in Tomah. Pastor William Rice will officiate. Burial with full military honors by VFW Post No. 1382 and American Legion Post No. 201 will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Tomah.
