Village of St. Andrews was laid out by James M. and Alexander Mather in 1850, and named after the patron saint of Scotland. Newberg followed in the following year through the efforts of David Shriver and Leonard Kimmel. These towns have since been absorbed by Melrose.

Alexander's brother James M. is buried in Bethel Cemetery in Glenwood MO. Schuyler CO. MO.
