EVANS, Richard E. "Dick" 96, of Urbana, died at 11:40 P.M. Sunday, August 23, 2009. He was born December 10, 1912 in Urbana, a son of William Edgar and Nina (Ritchie) Evans. Dick was a graduate of Urbana Township High School, attended the Ohio State University School of Agriculture from 1930-1934 and served on the rifle team. He was an original member of the Buck Creek Presbyterian Church, and now a member of First Presbyterian Church of Urbana. In 1812 his family came to Ohio from Virginia and purchased what is now known as Powhaton Farms with an original deed signed by James Madison. He served on the board of directors of Champaign Landmark Farm Bureau from 1967 until 1982, established the first watershed conservancy district, was one of the first to embark on scientific use for agriculture, was the recipient of the Urbana Rotary Club Farmer of the Year in 1982. Dick was a member of Ohio State University Presidents Club, the Ohio Cattlemen Association, Champaign County Historical Society, Harmony Lodge #8 F& A.M. Antioch Shrine, and was a 32nd Degree Mason with the Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton. Survivors include his daughter, Nina Sue Berkemeier of Herndon, VA, son, Robert E. Evans and his wife Susan of Shining Tree, Ontario, Canada, grandchildren, Michael Berkemeier and his wife Angel, Melissa Romano and her husband Jason, Teresa McCracken, and Jennifer Stewart and her husband Harry, 11 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Erdean (Shy) Evans in 1992 and son, Richard William "Bill" Evans serving in the US Navy and reportedly missing in 1961. The family will receive friends 5:00 8:00 P.M. Thursday, August 27, 2009 in the WALTER & SMITH FUNERAL HOME, Urbana. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, August 28, 2009 in First Presbyterian Church of Urbana, 116 W. Court Street, Urbana with Rev. Kevin Horrigan officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Mechanicsburg, OH. Contributions may be made in Dicks memory to the Champaign County Historical Society, 809 East Lawn Ave., Urbana, OH 43078.
