Death (15 July 2009): MAPLETON - Forest H. Chandler, 100, passed away peacefully July 15, 2009, at his home.

He was born April 6, 1909, in Castle Hill, the son of Charles G.R. and Maude (Flannagin) Chandler. Forest was a successful farmer who retired early, stepping aside when his sons became farmers.

Forest was the oldest citizen of Mapleton, recipient of the Boston Post Cane Award, and was well known for his generosity, honesty and integrity. His efforts throughout the years in the Castle Hill Grange, Pamona Grange, The National Grange, Mapleton Historical Society, and the overseeing of the State Road Feeder Farm Picnic Grounds; his help with the beautification of Castle Hill Cemetery and the Mapleton High School Alumni Sarah Stephenson Memorial, being a member of the Class of 1926; as well as
his service to his church, Mapleton United Methodist Church, and his leadership in local fundraising for A.R. Gould Hospital, have all helped to make Mapleton and this area a better place to live.

Forest and his wife, Gladys (Smith) Chandler, who predeceased him in 1999, loved square dancing, and were charter members of the Presque Isle Spud Shufflers Square Dance Club. They would travel throughout New England to attend dances. Forest was also well known for his gardens, the dollhouse made to scale he built for his daughter, and the well kept grounds around his home. Many former youth of the area have used and appreciated the gymnasium that Forest maintained in his barn as well as the winter skating rink in his yard.

Surviving him are his sons and their wives, Darrell L. and Marilyn (Tompkins) Chandler, and Donald W. and Alice (Porter) Chandler; a daughter, Emilie C. Lovley and her husband, Carl, all of Mapleton; grandchildren, David Chandler, Darren Chandler, Kyle Chandler, Jody Tuttle, Mitchell Chandler, Carter Chandler, Cynthia McPherson,
Susan Haines and Sandra Galipeau; 19 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Margaret Russell.

In addition to his wife, Gladys; and his parents, he was predeceased by brothers and sisters, Alfred Chandler,
Bernice Bagley, Mildred Ellis, Lawrence Chandler, Donald Chandler, Raymond Chandler, Amy Grant and Arnold Chandler.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, July 20, at Mapleton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dorothy Matson officiating.

Friends may call 12:30 p.m. until the time of service at the church. Interment will be at Castle Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Mapleton United Methodist Church, care of Emilie C. Lovley, P.O. Box 215, Mapleton, ME 04757.
