Born Mattie Victoria Rainger, March 24, 1909, to Dora Young Rainger and Allen Rainger in Mullhall, Oklahoma. She attended public school in the Dudley community and Fallis, Oklahoma.
Mattie confessed her hope in Christ at an early age. She was baptized in Lane Chapel C.M.E. Church, where she spent her child¬hood. She was active in church, school, and community activities.
In 1931 she united in marriage to Essie Willie Brannon. To this union three children were born. Later the marriage was dissolved.
She later moved to Luther, Oklahoma and married Jessie Bailey. Essie, Jessie, her parents, four sisters: Minnie R. Wilson, Clementine R. Mukes, Myrtle V. Mitchell, her twin sister, Charlotte V. Rainger preceded her in death.
In moving to Luther she was a member of Douglass Baptist Church. Some of the auxiliaries of her church which she was involved included: Chairperson of the Usher Board. Her community and civic activities included P.T.A., 4H Club, Home Demonstration Club, Community Quilting Club, Life Member of Oklahoma City Branch N.A.A.C.P.
Mattie traveled with her daughter, Violet Hersey and her devoted son-in-law, Bill, a number of years until he retired from the Air Force. When she returned to Oklahoma City, she united with St. Luke Baptist Church, under the leadership of the Late Rev. Dewitt Roland.
Over the years, she was a warm, loving and caring person to all she met and will be greatly missed.
Those left to cherish her memories are her two daughters: Violet O. Hersey and devoted son-in-law William Hersey of Oklahoma City, and Kim Cain of Norman, Oklahoma; three sons: Allen Bobo of Sacramento, California, Glenn Brannon and wife, Brenda of Oklahoma City, and Harold Butler and wife, Lois of Oklahoma City; four sisters: Dorothy Pitts of Oklahoma City, Marie Rainger of Oklahoma City, Eulila Davis and husband, Joseph of Oklahoma City, Ila B. Biser and husband, Anthony of Oklahoma City; son of her twin sister, Earl Williams; ten grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren; a host of loving, devoted nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
